indonesia overview

Indoniesa is the world’s largest island nation with over 17,000 islands making up the archipelago it stretches over 1.9m square kilometres. Already a popular tourist destination for hotspots such as Bali, Java and Sumatra, Indonesia has so much to offer. A rich vibrant culture that varies from island to island is one reason to keep on coming back, time and time again as no trip is ever the same. Diving in Indonesia is accessible and affordable for the most part, beginners can try diving in Bali where the water is calm, clear and warm whilst still offering sightings of turtles, reef sharks and more. Bali is also home to one of the best shore dives in the world - the USAT Liberty that is accessed just off Tulamben and lies in less than 30m of water. For the more adventurous there is Komodo, home to the world famous dragons, where the current demands respect at all times but will reward you with sightings of sharks, turtles, manta rays, dolphins and healthy coral reefs and is best accessed by a liveaboard diving boat. For those who are more adventurous still there is the jewel in the crown of Indonesian diving - Raja Ampat, the Four Kings. Located just off West Papua, Raja has attained near mythical status amongst the diving community for the untouched coral reefs and bio diversity. It is said that it has the highest biodiversity in the world and you can certainly see why. The water is calm and clear which lends itself to fantastic visibility and is home to the weird and wonderful. Chances are that you’ll get to see turtles, reef sharks as well as pygmy seahorses and other rarities such as the wobbegong shark laying in wait for its next victim.

In addition to the wonderful diving found in Indonesia you can combine it with the holiday of a lifetime with visits to ancient temples, islands overtaken by dragons and wonderful food, friendly people and lifelong memories. Indonesia is certainly one of my favourite places to dive and I feel like I have only just scratched the surface, other diving hotspots include Sulawesi, the Banda Sea, Lembeh Strait, Indonesian Borneo and so much more.
